Brief about opportunities in India
In 2016 the transaction value for the Indian FinTech sector was estimated to be approximately USD $33 billion, and is forecast to reach USD $73 billion in 2020, growing at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22%.
Numerous factors can be attributed towards the growth in demand for FinTech in India - these include rapidly expanding internet and mobile penetration, emergence of a younger, wealthier and digital-savvy generation, and a regulatory and policy environment encouraging digital solutions.
The 'Payments' segment has been the most funded within the Indian FinTech landscape, however, banking technology solutions, including B2B products, are also experiencing strong growth.
The Digital Financial Inclusion Opportunity
What makes Indian stand out as a FinTech market is the potential demand emanating from the world's largest unbanked population combined with a strong technology ecosystem. India accounts for around 21% of the world's unbanked adult population but is ranked 3rd in terms of the number of smartphone users.
The Government of India along with regulators such as SEBI and RBI are supporting the ambition of the Indian economy to become a cashless digital economy. Digital KYC Initiatives such as Aadhaar and the emergence of Unified Payments Interface provide a good foundation for FinTech companies to boost financial inclusion across the country.
The strength of the Indian tech infrastructure and regulatory support combined with the significant demand across arrange of sectors make India one of the most promising global markets for UK FinTech companies.
